Why do you offer pre-ordering?

We are a tiny, family-run company, and our cash-flow is always a problem. So we have to find creative ways of getting our work in print. Pre-orders help us pay our up-front printer costs. Without money up front, the printer won't print our books! This has been especially important lately, since we’ve recently switched to a new printer in the USA who gives us very high-quality books. They do lovely work. Sadly, what they can’t give us is a whole lot of credit.

What about these pre-order sketch bookplates I've heard about?

For a limited time before the books come out, we offer a special deal: for the price of the book and an extra $25 you can get a special book plate with an original sketch by Phil. We even let you choose the character.

Some guidelines:

--Please use the little box near the top of the item detail page to tell us what Girl Genius character you would like in your sketch. If you leave the box blank, Phil will choose for you! (You might wind up with a nice drawing of Agatha, but maybe not. He's a wild man. Last time, he got tired of drawing Agatha and drew all kinds of other characters. So if you care, tell us who you want.)

--One character only!

--Yes, the character will be wearing clothes. Go ahead and let us know if you want the clothes to be...erm...small. But we're not doing the really super naughty stuff here, 'kay?

--The bookplate won’t have glue or stickum of any kind. If you want to glue it into your book, we suggest a nice acid-free library paste.

--The bookplate is approx. 5” x 8” (12.5mm x 20.5mm)

-- Sketches are available only with Pre-ordered books. Phil ended up doing an astonishing amount of these last time, and it made him cry. This time, we're looking at capping the sketches at around 500. Which will still make Phil cry, but he's determined to do this sketch thing, so he'll just have to tough it out.

What do the bookplates look like?

How nice of you to ask. Here's a sample. Obviously, your art will be different, because we're talking about original drawings.

What if I just want to place a pre-order without a sketch?

You will be able to do that, when we're a bit closer to the release date. Our helpers, who are actually friends and relatives who often don't even get paid, have requested (okay, demanded) that we never mix the two pre-order offers ever again. So...when we stop with the sketch offer, we'll go to the plain pre-order offer. Watch our news page, that's where I'll make the announcement.

Hey! The sketches were cheaper last time!

Yes, they were. And Phil ended up doing a meeeelyun of them. And the rest of us were kind of overwhelmed by the unexpected difficulites of making sure everybody got the sketches they wanted. Heh. This time, I have been commanded by our office assistant (who is, in fact, the boss of me) to raise the price and cap the number of sketches. I hear and obey. (Edit: She did it to me again, this time around. Seriously, these things aren't getting any cheaper. Phil is going less crazy, though... so I guess it's a good thing.)

I pre-ordered the Vol.One color edition. Can I change that to a Vol. 9 pre-order?

Girl Genius Volume One (now in color!) has been pushed back to early Summer 2010. If you have pre-ordered Volume One, you can either wait, and your order will be shipped to you when we get the books, or you can fill out this form to switch to Volume Nine.

Please watch our news page for updates.

When can I expect my books to ship?

Pre-ordering from us doesn’t mean that you’ll necessarily get your books any faster than if you bought them at a regular store, it just means you can order ahead of time.
Orders with multiple items will be filled when all the items are in stock.
If you need something sooner, please order it separately from the pre-ordered books.

The Girl Genius Volume Nine and the reprint of Girl Genius Volume Three are expected to ship sometime before the middle of June 2010. If they arrive earlier from the printer they may ship sooner than that, we're actually expecting them to arrive here at our studio in late May.

The Girl Genius Volume One Color Edition has been pushed back to a Summer release date. We'll post more information when we have it.

More up-to-date news will periodically be posted on our news page.
